The 1599 Geneva Bible is a significant English translation of the Bible, first published in 1560 and later revised in 1599. It was produced by a group of Protestant exiles in Geneva during the reign of Queen Mary I of England. The Geneva Bible is notable for being the first to include numbered verses and for its widespread influence, especially among English Puritans and early American settlers. It was also the Bible used by William Shakespeare and many of the Pilgrims who journeyed to the New World. The translation was highly regarded for its accuracy and the inclusion of extensive marginal notes that reflected the Reformers' theological views.

Description

Binding re-backed and re-cornered in matching brown calf. Retaining contemporary front cover with central lozenge and majority of rear cover lad down, Spine with four blind- lined raised bands and the words " The Bible" lettered in gilt on the black morocco label. Plain endpapers. Gold tooled Emblem on front board

Condition:

Crisp impression with wide margins throughout, sporadic staining and occasional spotting mostly to margins; general title page frayed to edges and slightly soiled. Final few leaves of Psalter frayed.
