The Geneva Bible (first published in 1560) was a pivotal English translation created by Protestant exiles in Geneva during Queen Mary I’s reign. It was the first English Bible with numbered verses and extensive marginal notes that reflected Calvinist theology. Popular among Puritans and the Pilgrims, the Geneva Bible was widely used for private study and worship. Its clear language and accessibility made it a favorite until it was eventually supplanted by the King James Bible in the early 17th century.
