Notes
The Coverdale Bible was the first complete Bible printed in English. It was translated by Myles Coverdale, a scholar and clergyman, who built upon the earlier work of William Tyndale. Unlike Tyndale’s translation, the Coverdale Bible was authorized for use in England under King Henry VIII. Coverdale used Latin and German texts, as well as Tyndale’s work, to complete the translation.
While not the most precise translation, it was significant for making the entire Bible accessible to English speakers for the first time. It paved the way for later translations, such as the Great Bible (1539) and eventually the King James Version (1611).
