Description

The Geneva Bible, first published in 1560, was an English translation created by Protestant scholars in Geneva during Queen Mary I’s reign. Known for its clear language, extensive marginal notes, and portability, it became the most widely read Bible of its time, influencing both Shakespeare and the Pilgrims. It was nicknamed the “Breeches Bible” for its translation of Genesis 3:7, but in some regions it was also called the “Goose Bible” because of the decorative printer’s mark featuring a goose used by its publisher. This Bible played a key role in shaping early Protestant thought and English religious life.
