Notes
The Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) is the official liturgical book used in the Roman Catholic Church for the celebration of the Mass. It contains the prayers, hymns, readings, and rituals required for the celebration of the Eucharist throughout the liturgical year, including specific texts for daily Mass, special feast days, and seasons like Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. The Missale Romanum plays a central role in the uniformity and centralization of Catholic worship, ensuring that the Mass is celebrated in the same manner worldwide, according to the guidelines of the Church.
The Missale Romanum has undergone various revisions throughout history, with the most notable being the revision after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. This revision, known as the Novus Ordo (New Order) Mass, introduced a number of changes, including the use of the vernacular languages instead of Latin for the celebration of the Mass, although Latin versions are still in use today. The Missale Romanum thus reflects both the continuity of Catholic liturgical traditions and the changes that have occurred within the Church over time. The book serves not only as a practical guide for priests but also as a symbol of the Church's rich liturgical heritage.
