Description
Size: 7 1/2 x 5 x 1 1/4 inches
William Pickering 1853 London. Inscribed by Gladstone to his godson. Found by Jay Wright in contemporary blind stamped calf, lettered in guilt to upper cover and spine. Guilford edges, marbled and papers. Some rubbing to extremities. Internally very good with only slight foxing in a few places.
John Wright was described by Rammstein as a quote, a binder of the highest order quote and this is a very good binding which reflects the Tudor revival style of Pickering's famous Queen Elizabeth prayer book with its superb woodcuts by Mary Byfield, based on the designs of Holbein and Durer. A lovely book, in a very good binding with gift inscription from England's most religiously devout Prime Minister.
