Notes

A Christmas Carol, written by Charles Dickens, was first published in December 1843 and quickly became one of his most celebrated works. The novella tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man who is transformed after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. It was both a social critique and a heartwarming tale that underscored themes of generosity, redemption, and the spirit of Christmas. Dickens wrote it during a time of personal financial struggles, hoping to highlight the plight of the poor in Victorian England. Its immediate success helped solidify many modern Christmas traditions and remains a cornerstone of holiday literature.

The March 1844 version of A Christmas Carol refers to the novella’s later reprint and editions that followed its initial success. The story’s popularity inspired several theatrical adaptations soon after its release, which spread its impact even further. Dickens also began public readings of the tale, which became a cherished part of his career. This version and subsequent editions reflected slight refinements but retained the same essence, ensuring that the work continued to resonate with audiences. Its enduring legacy is a testament to its universal message of compassion and human connection.
