Northanger Abbey is Jane Austen's satire of the gothic novel genre, published posthumously in 1817. The story follows Catherine Morland, a young, naïve woman who loves reading sensational gothic novels and dreams of adventure and mystery. She is invited to the fashionable Bath and later to the remote Northanger Abbey, the home of her new friends, the Tilney family. Catherine's imagination, fueled by her reading, leads her to believe that the abbey may harbor dark secrets. However, through her experiences and budding romance with Henry Tilney, she learns to distinguish fantasy from reality. The novel humorously critiques both the exaggerated Gothic novels of the time and the idealized notions of romance, while highlighting the importance of personal growth, self-awareness, and judgment in relationships.
