Notes

Northanger Abbey is a satirical novel by Jane Austen, written in the late 1790s but published posthumously in 1817. It follows Catherine Morland, a naïve and imaginative young woman who loves Gothic novels and finds herself invited to Northanger Abbey, a grand estate that she begins to suspect hides dark secrets. Through Catherine’s misadventures and misunderstandings, Austen playfully critiques the melodrama and clichés of Gothic fiction while also examining themes of perception, self-awareness, and the social realities of courtship and marriage. Lighthearted and witty, Northanger Abbey is both a coming-of-age story and a clever commentary on literary trends of the time.
