The Mask of Cthulhu, first published in 1958, is a collection of interconnected stories by August Derleth, expanding upon the mythos originally created by H. P. Lovecraft. The volume presents a series of narratives centered on the investigation of occult forces and the lingering presence of ancient, malevolent entities, most notably Cthulhu. Structured with a more unified and accessible approach than Lovecraft’s often fragmentary tales, Derleth’s work introduces clearer moral distinctions and recurring characters, helping to systematize and extend the mythology into a more cohesive literary framework.

August Derleth (1909–1971) was a key figure in preserving and promoting Lovecraft’s legacy, co-founding Arkham House to bring Lovecraft’s works into hardcover publication. In addition to his role as editor and publisher, Derleth was a prolific writer who contributed his own stories to the Cthulhu Mythos, often shaping it into a more structured and mythologically ordered system than Lovecraft himself had intended. The Mask of Cthulhu reflects Derleth’s dual role as both interpreter and creator, and remains an important example of the continued development of cosmic horror in the mid-twentieth century.

The dust wrapper for this edition was designed by Richard Taylor, an artist also known for contributing cartoons to The New Yorker. His work reflects a distinctive mid-twentieth-century graphic sensibility, and the jacket design adds an additional layer of visual interest to the volume, linking the world of weird fiction with contemporary illustration and publishing design.
