Notes

First published in 1985, Blood Meridian; or, The Evening Redness in the West is a haunting historical novel by American author Cormac McCarthy, widely regarded as one of the most significant works of twentieth-century American literature. Set along the United States–Mexico border during the mid-nineteenth century, the novel follows a nameless teenage runaway known as “the kid” who joins a violent band of scalp hunters led by the ruthless John Joel Glanton. Drawing inspiration from historical accounts of the Glanton gang, McCarthy presents a brutal and philosophical exploration of violence, morality, fate, and the darker foundations of American westward expansion. The novel is particularly celebrated for its biblical prose, vivid descriptions of the Southwestern landscape, and the terrifying figure of Judge Holden, one of modern literature's most enigmatic antagonists. Though initially met with limited commercial success, Blood Meridian has since achieved extraordinary critical recognition and is frequently cited among the greatest American novels of the modern era.

Cormac McCarthy was an American novelist and playwright celebrated for his distinctive literary style, philosophical depth, and uncompromising portrayals of violence, survival, and the human condition. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, and raised primarily in Tennessee, McCarthy began his literary career with The Orchard Keeper (1965). His reputation grew considerably with Blood Meridian (1985), while All the Pretty Horses (1992) brought him widespread commercial success and the National Book Award. Later works, including No Country for Old Men (2005) and The Road (2006), further established his literary legacy, with the latter receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Known for his sparse punctuation, richly poetic language, and fascination with the American South and Southwest, McCarthy became one of the most influential and critically acclaimed writers of his generation.

The first edition of Blood Meridian, published in 1985, is among the most desirable and valuable collectible editions of modern American fiction. Issued in a relatively modest first printing, reportedly around 5,000 copies, the novel initially attracted limited readership and sold poorly compared with McCarthy's later works. Its striking original dust jacket, featuring artwork by Richard Adelson, has become particularly recognizable among collectors, and surviving first printings in fine condition with their original, unclipped jackets command substantial premiums. As the novel's reputation grew through critical reassessment and word of mouth, its first edition came to represent an important turning point in McCarthy's career and the evolution of American literary fiction. Today, it is prized not only for its scarcity but also for its association with a work that challenged traditional depictions of the American West and helped redefine the possibilities of the historical novel.
