Scarlett is in love with Ashley Wilkes, who marries his cousin Melanie Hamilton. In response, Scarlett marries multiple times, eventually forming a complicated relationship with the charming and cynical Rhett Butler. As the South crumbles during the war and struggles to rebuild afterward, Scarlett uses her cunning and resilience to survive and protect her family's plantation, Tara.
The novel is known for its epic scope, complex characters, and controversial portrayals of race and slavery. It was adapted into an iconic film in 1939.
