Extraordinary full Morocco binding, 11 3/4 inches tall. Magnificent binding with gilt raised bands and red inlaid calf ‘N’s within elegant gilt frames to the panels. Upper boards features a ground of bees, Napoleon’s representation of his status as Emperor, onto which is an onlay of Morocco with tiny opal bosses on the edges as if pinned to the board. Calf plaque of Napoleon Bonaparte with a laurel wreath and mighty sword all with onlays. All above a red inlaid ‘N’ and ‘B’ surmounted by the Emperor’s crown. Lower boards features has the same bee base with a large Morocco onlay bearing a larger red calf ‘N’ again surmounted by the Emperor’s crown. Splendid watered silk endpapers with wide gilt dentelles. Text is profusely illustrated. Both parts have chromolithographic frontispieces. An apparently unique binding in excellent condition. In the original French. Pristine condition.
