Royal Presentation copy from Queen Victoria Printed in London, inscribed by Queen Victoria to Lady Jane Churchill, Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen
Note
The work contains 34 poems by the radical Scottish hymn writer and versifier, including " The West Indies" on the subject of the abolition of slavery. Montgomery was imprisoned for sedition twice. He espoused causes such as the plight of child chimney sweeps and prison reform. Today his best known work is the Christmas Carol " Angels from the Realms of Glory" . The recipient of this lavish royal Christmas present was Lady Jane Churchill ( 1826-1900), Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen. This exquisitely bound volume is a testament to the bond between Jane and Queen Victoria.
