6W Alasdair Alpin MacGregor. London: Robert Hale Ltd. 1959. SIGNED First Edition
Notes
Alasdair Alpin MacGregor was a prolific Scottish author, folklorist, animal welfare campaigner, and landscape photographer whose deeply atmospheric work captured the vanishing traditions of the British Isles. Born in Applecross and fiercely proud of his heritage, MacGregor spent decades traversing the Hebrides and Highlands, documenting rural life both through his pen and behind the lens of his camera. While he was widely recognized for his authoritative travelogues, such as The Western Isles, MacGregor harbored a lifelong fascination with the supernatural. He approached regional ghost lore not as a detached skeptic, but as a cultural historian dedicated to preserving oral storytelling traditions. His distinct ability to blend vivid travel writing, local history, and uncanny tales earned him a devoted following among mid-century readers of psychical research and weird folklore.
Serving as the anticipated sequel to his popular 1957 compilation The Ghost Book, this volume gathers an eerie assortment of chilling, firsthand supernatural accounts and traditional hauntings across Scotland and England. Rather than inventing gothic fiction, MacGregor meticulously chronicles documented phenomena, legendary local curses, and accounts of phantom noises. Twenty-nine black-and-white plates reproduced directly from MacGregor's original field photographs, lend an authentic, documentary-style weight to the haunted locales.
