Description

The Mountain Meadows Massacre occurred in 1857 when a Mormon militia, along with some Native American allies, attacked and killed approximately 120 emigrants passing through Utah on their way to California. The victims, mostly Arkansas emigrants known as the Baker-Fancher party, were ambushed after a siege lasting several days. The massacre remains a tragic and controversial event in American history, reflecting tensions between Mormon settlers and other groups during the mid-19th century Westward expansion.
