Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches by Charles Godfrey Leland is a seminal text in modern witchcraft and Neopaganism. Presented as a translation of an ancient Italian manuscript, it introduces Aradia, a messianic figure sent by the goddess Diana to teach oppressed peasants witchcraft as a form of resistance against tyranny. The book blends myth, ritual, and folklore, featuring Diana as the primordial creatrix and Aradia as her daughter and earthly emissary. It includes spells, charms, and rituals, some of which have influenced contemporary practices like Wicca and Stregheria. However, the authenticity of the manuscript has been widely disputed, with scholars questioning its origins and Leland’s role in its creation. Despite these controversies, Aradia remains a foundational text for many in the Pagan community.
