Notes

The Wheel of Time is now one of the best-selling fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955). The series was completed posthumously, with the final three works written by Brandon Sanderson after Robert Jordan’s death in 2007. A television adaptation premiered in 2021. It follows a diverse group of characters as they navigate a world on the brink of an ancient battle between good and evil. Central to the story is Rand al'Thor, the prophesied Dragon Reborn, who must confront the Dark One to ensure the survival of the world. The series is known for its complex world-building, intricate political systems, and deep character development, spanning fourteen main books.

All first editions, first impressions signed and inscribed by the author in the first six volumes, including the first book, to the fantasy books of Ray Gibberd of Andromeda books. Based in Birmingham, the famous science-fiction bookshop was heralded as the world‘s oldest and largest of its kind before its closure in 2002. Gibberd spent over two decades at Andromeda, and arranged signing sessions there for Jordan and other speculative fiction.

At the Andromeda signing session of 13 September 1996, Jordan inscribed this copy of The Lord of Chaos, “For Ray, best wishes, and thanks for having me, Robert Jordan.” Later that day, Jordan spoke alongside Christopher Priest at the Birmingham Science Fiction Group monthly meeting. Gibberd’s bookstore was a hotspot for sci-fi fans living in the Midlands and those coming specifically from afar. It was a favorite of Terry Prachett, who undertook his first-ever book sighing at Andromeda and returned for all his books published between 1985 and 2001. The shop also hosted signing sessions for William Gibson and Iain Banks.

The Dragon Reborn, The Shadow Rising, The Fires of Heaven, and A Crown of Swords are all inscribed on the title pages. “For Ray, best wishes, Robert Jordan.” The Eye of the World was signed on a separate occasion on the title page and is one of 15,000 copies in the desirable hardcover issue, most of which went to libraries. Some additional copies of the wrappers issue were also bound up in hardcover to supplement the high demand; copies of this hybrid issue are distinguishable by being perfect-bound, rather than in gatherings as here.
