Book of Jasher
6B Book of Jasher. New York: M. M. Noah & A. S. Gould, 1840.
Notes
The Book of Jasher is an ancient work mentioned several times in the Hebrew Bible (notably in Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18), where it is cited as a respected source of poetry or historical tradition, but the original text has been lost. The versions known today are later writings that claim the same title but are not the biblical book itself; the most famous surviving one is a medieval Hebrew work that retells and expands biblical stories from Genesis through Joshua with legendary and moral detail. Because of this, the Book of Jasher is not part of the Jewish or Christian biblical canon, and scholars view the existing texts as imaginative biblical retellings rather than authentic ancient scripture, though they remain historically interesting for how later communities interpreted biblical history.
