1868 Deseret Alphabet, Phonetic primer introduced by Brigham Young

Notes

The "1868 Desert Alphabet Primer" is a historical educational text designed to teach Native American children in the Southwestern United States how to read and write using the English language. It was published in 1868 as part of the federal government's efforts to assimilate Native American communities into mainstream American culture. The primer featured an innovative approach, using the English alphabet to represent words and concepts from the children's familiar desert environment. This approach aimed to make learning more engaging and culturally relevant for the Native American students. While the intentions behind the primer were rooted in assimilationist policies, it remains a notable artifact in the history of Native American education and cultural preservation.

Description

The Deseret Alphabet was introduced in 1854 and was created by Parley P. Pratt, Heber C. Kimball and George D. Watt. Made up of thirty-eight characters to correlate with basic sounds in the English language, the Deseret Alphabet was intended to be used to help simplify the principles of the English language. Tan Hard Cover
