The author, Lewis Carroll, was the lifelong pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), a brilliant yet deeply introverted mathematician, logician, and ordained deacon at Christ Church, Oxford. Dodgson lived a structured academic life, publishing heavy treatises on geometry while harboring a private passion for photography and storytelling. The catalyst for his timeless fiction occurred on a golden July afternoon in 1862 during a rowing boat trip up the River Thames, where he invented the initial story to entertain Alice Liddell—the young daughter of the Dean of Christ Church—and her sisters. Urged by the children to write the story down, Dodgson painstakingly expanded the tale, adopting his famous pseudonym to publish the first volume in 1865. The monumental success of the book shattered the prevailing tradition of heavy-handed, moralistic children's literature, transforming a stuttering Oxford don into one of the most celebrated figures in global publishing history.

Hand-selected by Carroll due to his immense prestige as the chief political cartoonist for Punch magazine, John Tenniel brought a stark, satirical realism and a rigid structural discipline that perfectly anchored the author's whimsical, upside-down literary nonsense. Working through a painstaking collaborative process—wherein the notoriously demanding Carroll frequently forced him to redraw entire compositions—Tenniel executed his designs as ultra-precise pencil drawings on small blocks of dense boxwood, which were then meticulously cut by the master engravers at the Dalziel Brothers to produce the final electrotype printing plates. His suite of 92 total illustrations permanently fixed the iconic, ubiquitous character archetypes into the collective global consciousness: from the rigid, Victorian dress and striped stockings of Alice herself to the grotesque, bulbous features of the Duchess, the elegant pocket-watch-wielding white rabbit, and the unforgettable playing-card court. Tenniel’s absolute refusal to allow the commercial distribution of the 1865 first impression due to substandard printing quality forced Carroll to suppress the entire initial print run at massive personal expense, a monumental historical moment that ultimately ensured the subsequent, pristine December 1865 release would set the gold standard for high-fidelity commercial book printing for generations to come.
