C 1886 Lewis Carroll, FIRST EDITION, First issue
Notes
Alice's Adventures Under Ground is a facsimile of the original manuscript version of what would later become Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll . Written in 1864, it was a handwritten and illustrated book that Carroll created as a gift for Alice Liddell, the young girl who inspired the story. The manuscript is shorter and slightly different from the later published version, with simpler language and fewer episodes. Many of the characters and scenes from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are present, but it misses out the whole of the Mad Hatter's tea party, the scenes at the Duchesses' house, and the trial. The manuscript serves as a fascinating glimpse into the early stages of Carroll's imaginative creation.
