Notes
The Ars Goetia is the first and most well-known section of the 17th-century grimoire The Lesser Key of Solomon(Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis), a foundational text in Western demonology and ceremonial magic. It catalogs 72 demons said to have been summoned and bound by King Solomon, each with their own distinct attributes, ranks, powers, and sigils. The Ars Goetia provides detailed instructions for conjuring these spirits, including the tools, symbols, protections, and rituals required to safely summon and command them. Unlike later moralistic portrayals of demons, the text treats them more as powerful spiritual intelligences that can be compelled to serve the magician’s will—if the proper procedures and protections are followed. Blending Solomonic, Christian, and medieval magical traditions, the Ars Goetiahas remained highly influential in both historical and modern occult practices, inspiring everything from grimoires and ritual magic systems to popular culture depictions of demonology.
