5B Biblia Sacra. Switzerland: Basel, Johannesburg Froben. 1495

Notes

This 1495 Latin Bible, second edition of Froben’s “Poor Man’s Bible,” printed in Basel by the renowned humanist printer Johann Froben, reflects the early influence of the printing press on sacred texts. Though it does not include the woodcut illustrations typical of the Pauper’s Bibletradition, it features finely printed Latin text with occasional handwritten initials dispersed throughout—an elegant blend of print and hand-finished detail common in early incunabula (books printed before 1501). Earlier efforts, such as Froben’s 1491 edition, leaned more heavily on visual storytelling, but by 1495, emphasis had shifted toward clarity, uniformity, and broader dissemination of the biblical text itself. This volume stands as a testament to the transitional moment when sacred texts moved from the scriptorium to the printing press, helping usher in a new era of religious study and accessibility.

The Holy Bible is a sacred text in Christianity, composed of the Old and New Testaments. It includes historical accounts, poetry, prophecy, and teachings that form the foundation of Christian belief and practice. Revered by billions, it has been translated into more languages than any other book and remains one of the most widely read and distributed texts in history. Its influence extends beyond religion, shaping law, literature, art, and culture across centuries.
