Notes

Latin Bibles hold a significant place in the history of Christianity, serving as the principal scriptural texts of the Western Church for more than a thousand years. The most influential Latin translation, known as the Vulgate, was largely produced by Saint Jerome in the late fourth and early fifth centuries and became the standard Bible of medieval Western Europe. Before the invention of movable-type printing, Latin Bibles were painstakingly copied by hand, often adorned with elaborate illuminated initials and decorative illustrations. Johannes Gutenberg's famous Bible, printed around 1455, was itself a Latin Vulgate, marking a revolutionary moment in publishing history.
