Notes
"Catch-22" is a satirical novel by Joseph Heller, published in 1961. Set during World War II, it follows Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces bombardier, who becomes increasingly desperate to escape the war. The term "Catch-22" refers to a bureaucratic absurdity in which contradictory rules prevent escape from dangerous situations—in Yossarian's case, the rule that states a pilot is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he requests to be grounded, he is considered sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved from duty. The novel explores themes of the absurdity of war, the dehumanizing effects of bureaucracy, and the paradoxes inherent in human existence.
