Reverend Francis Vinton (1809–1872) was an American Episcopal clergyman born in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1830 and initially served as a second lieutenant in the 3rd Artillery. After resigning from the military in 1836, Vinton pursued religious studies and was ordained in 1839. He served in various parishes, including as Assistant Minister of Trinity Church in New York City from 1855 until his death in 1872.
Vinton is notably connected to President Abraham Lincoln through a pastoral visit following the death of Lincoln’s son, Willie, in 1862. Deeply mourning his son’s passing, Lincoln was counseled by Reverend Vinton, who emphasized the Christian belief in eternal life, telling the President that his son “is alive in paradise with Christ.” This interaction reportedly provided Lincoln with significant comfort during his period of grief. Description
Two volumes of brown pebbled leather with decorative gilt embossing framing the front and back boards as well as the spines and turn-ins. Four raised bands with gilt embossed lettering in compartments two and four of the spine and the Rev. Francis Vinton’s name embossed on both front boards. Illustrative engravings throughout. Weak front hinges on both volumes with some wear to the leather. Bumped corners with some fraying as well. Very good condition overall.
