Notes

The Deseret Alphabet 2nd Reader was one of the instructional books published in the 19th century to promote the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic writing system developed under the direction of Brigham Young, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The alphabet was designed to simplify English spelling and pronunciation, making it easier for new converts to learn and read English. The 2nd Reader, published in 1868, provided reading material for learners familiar with the basic symbols and sounds of the Deseret Alphabet, aiming to improve literacy and fluency through graded texts and practical exercises. Despite the LDS Church's efforts, the Deseret Alphabet did not gain widespread acceptance and was eventually abandoned.
