Dopey Original Drawing
5C Walt Disney, Drawing on Celluloid, No.35. Aiken Dott & Son, The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh. Circa 1937.
Notes
The process of drawing on celluloid for Disney’s original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs involved animators creating individual drawings on transparent sheets of celluloid, or “cels.” First, key poses and actions were drawn on paper by animators. These drawings were then transferred onto cels, where artists would carefully paint the characters and backgrounds. The cels were then placed over static backgrounds and photographed frame by frame to create the illusion of movement. This traditional hand-drawn animation technique was labor-intensive but essential to bringing Disney’s first full-length animated feature to life.
