Description

The Geneva Bible (first published in 1560) was one of the most influential English translations of the Scriptures during the Reformation era. Produced by Protestant scholars who had fled to Geneva, Switzerland, to escape persecution under Queen Mary I of England, it became the household Bible of English-speaking Protestants for nearly a century. Known for its clear, accessible language and extensive marginal notes, the Geneva Bible made the text understandable to common readers and emphasized themes of faith, personal responsibility, and resistance to tyranny.

It was the first English Bible to use verse numbers throughout and included maps, illustrations, and study aids that made it both practical and educational. Its commentary often reflected a strong Protestant and Calvinist perspective, which sometimes clashed with the authority of the monarchy. For this reason, it was beloved by Puritans and Pilgrims, many of whom carried it to America on the Mayflower.
