German Martin Luther Bible*
5B 1673 Martin Luther Bible in German
Notes
The Martin Luther Bible is a German translation of the Bible by Martin Luther, first completed in 1534. Luther translated the New Testament from Greek into German in 1522, and the Old Testament from Hebrew by 1534. His translation was pivotal in making the Bible accessible to ordinary German-speaking people, as previous versions were in Latin. Luther’s use of the vernacular helped standardize the German language and had a profound impact on German literature, culture, and religion.
The Luther Bible also played a key role in the Protestant Reformation, as it promoted the idea that individuals could interpret the scriptures for themselves without reliance on the Catholic Church. Luther’s work emphasized clarity, simplicity, and fidelity to the original texts, while also reflecting his theological viewpoints. It remains influential in German-speaking Christian communities today.
