Notes

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is one of the most successful and influential literary works of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The series consists of seven books, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) and concluding with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2007). The books follow the coming-of-age journey of Harry Potter, a young wizard, as he confronts the dark wizard Lord Voldemort and uncovers truths about his past and the magical world. The series has sold over 500 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 80 languages.

The first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published in the UK by Bloomsbury on June 26, 1997. The initial print run consisted of only 500 hardback copies, 300 of which were sent to libraries. These true first editions are now extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors. A paperback edition followed shortly, and as the book gained popularity, multiple reprints were issued—known as "impressions" in UK publishing. By 2000, the book had reached its 32nd impression, reflecting the explosive growth in demand following the release of the later books and the beginning of the film adaptations.

Each of the seven books saw multiple printings and editions, including deluxe illustrated versions, special anniversary editions, and various box sets. The U.S. editions were published by Scholastic, beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 1998, a title change made for the American market. The U.S. printings also involved different cover artwork, typesetting, and minor textual differences.
