Notes
These stamps are Jane Austen commemorative stamps issued by the Royal Mail on 22 October 1975 marked the bicentenary of Austen’s birth (1775–1817) and were among the first British stamps to celebrate a novelist through her characters rather than her portrait. Designed by Barbara Brown and printed by Harrison & Sons, the four-stamp set beautifully illustrated scenes from Austen’s novels: Emma (8½p), Pride and Prejudice (10p), Sense and Sensibility (11p), and Mansfield Park(13p). Each design captures the Regency elegance and subtle social wit of Austen’s fiction through delicate, pastel-toned artwork depicting key characters—such as Emma and Mr Woodhouse or Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy—set against period interiors and landscapes. The issue was warmly received by both philatelists and literary admirers, and it remains a beloved example of 1970s British stamp design, combining literary heritage with the refined aesthetic of the era’s Royal Mail commemoratives.
