Notes
John Taylor (1808–1887) was a significant figure in the early history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Born in England, he emigrated to Canada and later converted to the LDS faith in 1836. Taylor became a close associate of Joseph Smith, the founder of the church, and was with him during his martyrdom in 1844, where Taylor was seriously wounded. He later succeeded Brigham Young as the third president of the LDS Church, leading from 1880 until his death. Taylor's presidency was marked by challenges, including the U.S. government's opposition to the church's practice of polygamy, which led to his time in hiding during the later years of his life. He was a respected theologian, editor, and author, remembered for his steadfast leadership and contributions to LDS doctrine.
