Notes
John Taylor was a significant figure in 19th-century American religious history, serving as the third president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1880 until his death in 1887. Born in England in 1808, he emigrated to Canada, where he converted to Mormonism in 1836. Taylor was known for his strong defense of the faith, particularly during the period of intense persecution in Nauvoo, Illinois, where he survived the violent attack that led to the death of church founder Joseph Smith. His leadership was marked by resilience and dedication to the expansion of the church, including the establishment of settlements in the western United States. Taylor’s presidency oversaw significant growth despite challenges such as the federal government's opposition to polygamy, a practice then endorsed by the LDS Church.
