Notes
Joseph Smith, born on December 23, 1805, in Sharon, Vermont, was the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon Church. Raised in a poor farming family, Smith claimed to have experienced a series of visions starting at age 14, which he said included visits from God and Jesus Christ. In 1827, he reported discovering golden plates inscribed with ancient writings, which he translated into the Book of Mormon, published in 1830. Smith's teachings attracted a following, but also significant opposition and persecution. He led his followers to establish communities in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. In 1844, amidst growing tensions, Smith was arrested and ultimately killed by a mob while in jail in Carthage, Illinois. His legacy continues to influence millions of Latter-day Saints worldwide.
