Notes

Joseph Smith, born in 1805 in Vermont, was the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1820, he claimed to have had a vision of God and Jesus Christ, which led to his belief that he was called to restore the true Christian church. Smith said he was guided by an angel to uncover and translate the Book of Mormon, which he published in 1830. His teachings attracted many followers but also stirred significant controversy and persecution. Smith led his followers through various locations in the U.S., including Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. In 1844, while in jail in Carthage, Illinois, he was killed by a mob, cementing his legacy as a prophet for Latter-day Saints. His life remains influential within Mormonism today.
