Notes
James Sprenger was a 15th-century Dominican inquisitor and theologian, best known for co-authoring the infamous witch-hunting manual Malleus Maleficarum ("The Hammer of Witches") in 1487 along with Heinrich Kramer.
Malleus Maleficarum became the most authoritative text on witchcraft for centuries in Europe. It condemned witchcraft as heresy and laid out detailed procedures for identifying, trying, and punishing witches. The book promoted misogynistic views, asserting that women were more susceptible to demonic influence, and it helped fuel the European witch craze, leading to countless persecutions. Though controversial even in its time, it was widely distributed thanks to the printing press.
