Old Age and Friendship
5W Cicero, Macmillan’s and Co London, 1903
Notes
Cicero’s On Old Age (De Senectute) and On Friendship (De Amicitia) are philosophical dialogues that offer timeless reflections on life’s later stages and the value of companionship. In On Old Age, Cicero argues that aging can be fulfilling if approached with wisdom, virtue, and a focus on intellectual and moral pursuits, emphasizing that a well-lived life leaves no fear of death. In On Friendship, he celebrates friendship as a bond rooted in mutual virtue and goodwill, essential for happiness and resilience in both good times and adversity. Both works stress the enduring power of character and relationships in achieving a meaningful life.
