Notes
C. S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy—sometimes called the Ransom Trilogy—consists of three interconnected novels that combine science fiction with philosophical and theological themes. The set begins with Out of the Silent Planet (1938), which introduces Dr. Elwin Ransom and presents Mars (Malacandra) as a world of spiritual harmony contrasted with Earth’s fallen state. It is followed by Perelandra (1943), set on Venus, where Ransom confronts a new temptation that echoes the biblical Fall, focusing on obedience and free will. The trilogy concludes with That Hideous Strength (1945), which shifts the action largely to Earth and blends dystopian fiction with social satire, portraying a modern technocratic evil opposed by a small community grounded in traditional moral order. Together, the three novels form a unified exploration of humanity, temptation, redemption, and cosmic order.
