Pocahontas: Or the Nonparell of Virginia*
5b 1933 David Garnett, first edition
Notes
Pocahontas by David Garnett is a historical novel that reimagines the life of Pocahontas, the Native American woman who famously interacted with English settlers in the early 17th century. The novel explores her relationship with Captain John Smith, her eventual marriage to John Rolfe, and her role as a bridge between Native American and English cultures. Garnett’s portrayal delves into both the mythic aspects of Pocahontas’s story and the historical realities of colonialism, cultural conflict, and identity. Though fictionalized, the book attempts to capture the emotional and cultural complexities of Pocahontas’s life and legacy.
