Notes

Saur's German Bible, printed by Christopher Saur in 1743, holds the distinction of being the first European-language Bible published in America. This German-language edition was aimed at the large population of German immigrants in Pennsylvania, particularly the German-speaking religious communities such as the Lutherans and Mennonites. Saur, a devout Pietist, saw his work as a spiritual mission to provide affordable Bibles for German settlers. His Bible became a symbol of religious and cultural identity for the German-American community in the colonial period.
