Notes
The story of Sleeping Beauty, as popularized by the 19th century, centers on a beautiful princess cursed to sleep for 100 years until awakened by a prince’s kiss. This tale, rooted in European folklore, was first written down by French author Charles Perrault in 1697 as La Belle au bois dormant (“The Sleeping Beauty”). The Brothers Grimm later published their own version, Dornröschen (“Little Briar Rose”), in 1812. Both versions drew from older folk tales, with origins tracing back to medieval stories of enchanted sleep, a theme that evolved through various cultures and adaptations.
