Notes

The American Review: A Whig Journal of Politics, Literature, Art and Science was an influential American periodical published between 1845 and 1846. Founded by the Whig Party, it aimed to showcase intellectual and political content that aligned with Whig ideals, focusing on topics such as politics, literature, art, and science. The journal attracted a range of prominent writers, intellectuals, and political figures, contributing to the cultural and political discourse of the time. Despite its short run, it played an important role in shaping public opinion during the mid-19th century.

One of the most notable moments in the journal’s history occurred in February 1845, when The American Review became the first periodical to publish Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”. The poem, which immediately captivated readers with its haunting atmosphere and rhythmic cadence, quickly became a literary sensation. Poe, who was struggling to achieve recognition, saw “The Raven’s” success in The American Review as a significant breakthrough in his career. The poem's publication in this journal helped elevate Poe to national fame, securing his place as one of America’s most important literary figures.
