Notes
The Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, published in 1929, offers a rare and introspective look into the life and presidency of the 30th President of the United States. Written with the same economy of words that characterized Coolidge’s public persona, the autobiography reflects his values of simplicity, thrift, and service. Coolidge recounts his humble beginnings in rural Vermont, his rise through local and state politics, and his time as vice president and president, including his unexpected ascension to the presidency following the death of Warren G. Harding in 1923.
The book provides insight into Coolidge’s leadership during the prosperous but turbulent 1920s, including his focus on fiscal responsibility, limited government, and support for business. Coolidge also reflects on personal moments, including the tragic death of his son, which deeply impacted him. As the only president to publish an autobiography shortly after leaving office, Coolidge’s work is notable for its straightforward and understated style, mirroring the man often referred to as “Silent Cal.” It remains an essential resource for understanding his philosophy and his role in shaping the Roaring Twenties.
