Notes
The BBC Hymn Book of 1951 was compiled for use in the BBC's radio broadcasts of Christian worship, particularly the long-running program Sunday Half Hour. Edited by music scholar Percy Dearmer and others, the hymnal reflected a desire to unify and elevate the quality of hymn-singing across the UK during the post-war years. It brought together a carefully curated selection of traditional hymns, gospel songs, and newer compositions, with an emphasis on theological clarity, poetic strength, and congregational accessibility. The book served not only as a resource for religious broadcasts but also became a staple in many homes and churches, representing the BBC's commitment to cultural and spiritual life through music.
Queen Mary (1867–1953), wife of King George V and grandmother to Queen Elizabeth II, was a symbol of royal dignity and steadfastness through decades of national upheaval. Born Princess Mary of Teck, she married into the British royal family and became queen consort in 1910. Known for her strong sense of duty, composure, and deep knowledge of royal protocol and history, she played a quiet but influential role during both World Wars and the early years of her son, King George VI’s, reign. Queen Mary was also a passionate collector and preserver of royal art, furniture, and historical artifacts, helping to shape the modern Royal Collection. Her grace under pressure and commitment to the monarchy left a lasting legacy in one of the most transformative periods in British royal history.
