Note
"The Courtship of Miles Standish" is a narrative poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, first published in 1858. Set in the early days of the Plymouth Colony, the poem recounts the love triangle between Miles Standish, John Alden, and Priscilla Mullins. Miles Standish, a military captain, enlists his friend John Alden to court Priscilla on his behalf. However, Priscilla confesses her love directly to John, causing him great inner conflict as he must choose between his loyalty to his friend and his own feelings for Priscilla. Ultimately, John reveals Priscilla's feelings to Miles, who gracefully steps aside, allowing John and Priscilla to marry. The poem explores themes of love, duty, and honor in the context of early American colonial life.
