The Picture of Dorian Gray*
5b 1908 Oscar Wilde, First Illustrated Edition, Charles Carrington Paris Publisher
Notes
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is a Gothic novel that explores themes of vanity, morality, and the consequences of living a hedonistic life. It tells the story of Dorian Gray, a young man who, influenced by the philosophy of indulgence and beauty espoused by Lord Henry Wotton, wishes that his portrait would age while he remains youthful. As Dorian pursues a life of decadence and moral corruption, his hidden portrait grows more grotesque with each of his sins, reflecting his inner decay. The novel examines the nature of beauty, the conflict between appearance and reality, and the dark side of desire. Wilde’s only novel, it remains a classic exploration of excess and the pursuit of eternal youth.
