Notes
The Secret History is the acclaimed debut novel of American author Donna Tartt and a defining work of modern literary suspense. Set at an elite liberal arts college in Vermont, the novel follows a small, intellectually gifted group of students studying ancient Greek under an enigmatic professor. Their obsession with classical philosophy, beauty, and the pursuit of transcendent experiences gradually leads them into moral corruption, secrecy, and murder. Revealing the central crime from its opening pages, Tartt constructs an intricate psychological mystery concerned less with who committed the murder than with the motivations and consequences surrounding it. Drawing upon Greek tragedy, classical literature, and the traditions of the Gothic novel, The Secret History explores the dangerous intersection of intellectual arrogance, privilege, obsession, and morality. An immediate critical and commercial success, the novel has since become a modern cult classic and a foundational influence on the literary aesthetic now widely known as “dark academia.”
Donna Tartt is an American novelist celebrated for her richly atmospheric prose, psychologically complex characters, and meticulous approach to literary fiction. Born in Greenwood, Mississippi, she attended Bennington College in Vermont, where she began developing The Secret History while studying alongside a circle of aspiring writers that included Bret Easton Ellis. Published when Tartt was just twenty-eight, the novel established her as a major literary talent and became an international bestseller.
