Notes

The Snow Queen is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a young girl named Gerda who embarks on a dangerous journey to rescue her friend Kai after he’s been enchanted and taken by the icy Snow Queen. The story explores themes of friendship, love, and the battle between warmth and coldness, both literally and metaphorically. Gerda’s determination and pure heart ultimately break the Snow Queen’s spell.

Disney’s Frozen is loosely inspired by The Snow Queen, but the Disney movie takes a very different direction. The character Elsa shares some traits with the Snow Queen—like her ice powers and emotional isolation—but Frozen focuses more on sisterly love and self-acceptance than the original tale’s darker, more complex themes. So, The Snow Queen was definitely an influence, but Frozen is its own unique story.
